3, 2, 1 Backup Best Practice Rule

3, 2, 1 Backup Best Practice Rule

What is the best backup practice? Is your current backup procedure your friend or your foe and how does this relate to a random countdown?!

If you are a child of the 80’s then the phrase “3, 2, 1” will conjure up images of a smiley faced bin. Kudos for those of you that can remember the name of this bin? Answers on a postcard please …

3, 2, 1 Backup Best Practice

But let’s drag ourselves out of the shoulder padded, jelly shoed 80’s and back to the present day for a moment. For our “3, 2, 1” phrase is actually a handy backup best practice safety tool. So a bin couldn’t be further from what we need!

Our 3,2,1 rule refers to the backing up of Data. For a tiny 4 letter word, Data sounds ‘busy’ but Data is the facts, figures and information on your compter – ultimately your files. And a Data loss could be make or break for your business.

So how does the 3, 2, 1 backup best practice rule work?

3 – Keep 3 copies (yes 3!) of your Data. This could, for example, be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday backups. For others this could be 3 months worth.

2 – Save your backups in 2 different places. If you only have one backup disk and that fails, then you’ve lost everything! For backup best practice it should ideally be in two different formats.

1 – Store one copy of your Data offsite (in the Cloud). By keeping one backup site locally and another cloud based you are doubling your protection. Double protection = peace of mind and a much better nights sleep!

At Alcom IT we offer a hybrid backup – a best practice disaster recovery strategy that backs up to both a device of your choice and the Cloud. If you’d like to find out more please give us a call on 03333 033 033 or drop us an email at [email protected].
