More than just making calls

Plenty of everyday business equipment still needs a physical line behind it. If any of the below sounds familiar, a landline is what you're after.

Telephone Systems

Traditional desk phone systems and switchboards that were built to sit on a physical line.

Fax Machines

Still a requirement in legal, medical and manufacturing settings - and still dependent on a line.

Alarm Systems

Intruder and fire alarms that dial out to a monitoring centre need a dedicated, always-on line.

Card Machines

Older payment terminals often dial out over an analogue line to authorise each transaction.

Lift Emergency Lines

Lifts, gates and door entry panels rely on a line so somebody always answers in an emergency.

Backup Lines

A spare line kept aside so you can still take calls if your broadband or main system drops.

Types of phone lines

There are four main types of line, and the one you need comes down to how many calls you have to handle at the same time. Here's how they compare.

PSTN

1 call at a time

This is a Public Switched Telephone Network. Most commonly used by home users or small businesses that only require a single phone line.

ISDN2

2 calls at a time

An Integrated Services Digital Network that allows two calls to be made at once, ideal for businesses that require an extra phone line.

Multiline

Several calls, one number

This is a group of PSTN lines with one phone number. This is commonly used by businesses with one phone number but require more than one line to take multiple calls at one time.

ISDN30

Up to 30 calls at a time

Another version of an Integrated Services Digital Network. Unlike ISDN2, it is ideal for large businesses as it allows up to 30 calls to be made at one time.

Not sure which one you need?

You don't have to work it out on your own. Tell us how many people answer the phone and what equipment you have plugged in, and we'll tell you which type of line suits the way you actually work.

The ISDN and PSTN switch-off

Before you sign up for ISDN2, ISDN30 or a standard PSTN line, there's a timeline worth knowing about.

Openreach has stopped selling new PSTN and ISDN lines and is retiring the entire network as part of the UK's "Digital Switchover" (also known as the PSTN/ISDN Stop Sell). Existing ISDN2, ISDN30 and analogue PSTN lines are being migrated across to digital alternatives over the next few years, and providers are no longer able to sell these line types to new customers.

That doesn't mean you need to act today - existing lines keep working through the migration - but it does mean any new phone system or line decision should be made with the switch-off in mind. We'd always recommend checking the current Openreach timeline for your exchange before committing to a new ISDN or PSTN install.

The good news is the alternative is usually better, not just compliant: VoIP and 3CX phone systems run over your internet connection instead of a physical line, and typically cost less to run once you're through the switch. As the same team that supplies your landlines, we can advise on the right time to move and manage the migration for you rather than leaving you to work it out alone.

Installed properly, supported afterwards

Getting a line in shouldn't be a project you have to manage yourself. We take care of the survey, the order and the engineer visit, then stay on hand once everything is live.

Because we look after your IT and your telecoms together, there's one number to ring when something needs attention, and no passing you between suppliers.

Frequently asked questions

The things businesses ask us most about landline phone lines.

Is ISDN being switched off?
Yes. Openreach has stopped selling new PSTN and ISDN lines and is retiring the whole network as part of the UK's Digital Switchover, with existing lines being migrated across over the next few years. If you rely on ISDN2 or ISDN30 today, it's worth planning your move to VoIP or a 3CX phone system now rather than waiting for a forced switch-off date.
Can I keep my existing number if I switch provider or line type?
Yes. Whether you're moving to a new line, a new provider, or across to VoIP, your existing landline number can normally be ported across. We handle the porting process for you so customers and suppliers keep calling the number they already have saved.
How long does phone line installation take?
A straightforward PSTN or ISDN2 line is typically a couple of weeks from order to a working engineer visit, while multiline and ISDN30 installs can take longer depending on how much work Openreach needs to do on-site. We give you a realistic timeline as part of your quote, not just an order date.
What happens if the line goes down?
You call us, not the network provider. We report and chase the fault on your behalf through to resolution, and where a line supports something critical, like an alarm or a lift emergency phone, we'll talk through backup options so you're not left exposed while it's fixed.
What's the difference between PSTN, ISDN2, Multiline and ISDN30?
They differ mainly in how many calls they can carry at once. PSTN is a single analogue line for one call at a time, ISDN2 handles two calls at once, Multiline groups several PSTN lines under one number, and ISDN30 scales up to 30 simultaneous calls for larger sites or call centres.
